2018 SEA-HVO Traveling Fellowships Awarded

Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO), in collaboration with the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA), is pleased to share that ten anesthesia residents will receive a 2018 SEA-HVO Traveling Fellowship.

The recipients are: Hassan Aboumerhi, MD (University of Chicago); Brenton Alexander, MD (University of California, San Diego); Praba Boominathan, MD (Yale University); Michael Do, MD, MBA (University of California, San Francisco); Cara Ann Iorianni , MD (Emory University School of Medicine); Oneychi Megafu, MBBS (Drexel University College of Medicine); Jose Navas-Blanco, MD (Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit); Samuel Percy, MD (University of Washington Medical Center); Andrew Rivera-Hober, MD (New York Presbyterian Hospital); and David Rudnick, MD (Massachusetts General Hospital).

The SEA-HVO Fellowship allows senior anesthesia residents the opportunity to improve anesthesia care in resource-scarce countries by teaching and mentoring their counterparts. The SEA-HVO Fellows are able to witness a wide range of surgical pathologies and anesthetic techniques. They learn to communicate more effectively with people from different cultures and observe the realities and constraints of delivering health care in a resource-scarce environment. SEA-HVO Fellows serve as teachers of anesthesia and role models for anesthesia students at HVO project sites. They develop the knowledge, skills and passion necessary to become leaders in global health, contributing to safe anesthesia care around the world now and for years to come.

The SEA-HVO Traveling Fellowship would not be possible without the generous support of Dr. Jo Davies, Dr. Chris and Rebecca Dobson, Dr. Lena E. Dohlman, Dr. Lisa Feintech, Dr. Gary E. Loyd, and numerous other SEA members.

The Society for Education in Anesthesia is a nonprofit educational organization for anesthesiology educators who desire to improve their skills in anesthesia education.

Individuals who wish to support the SEA-HVO Traveling fellowship are encouraged to make a gift through the HVO’s online form. From now through April 30th, your gifts will be matched two to one by Lena Dohlman, MD, MPH. For every dollar you contribute, Dr. Dohlman will commit an additional $2.

About HVO

Health Volunteers Overseas is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve global health through education of the local health workforce in resource-scarce countries. HVO volunteers build local capacity by empowering health care professionals with knowledge and skills to address the health care needs of their communities. HVO volunteers are trained health care professionals - physicians, nurses, dentists, physical therapists and others - willing to donate their time and expertise to work side-by-side with their colleagues overseas. Since 1986, HVO staff and volunteers have collaborated with a variety of health institutions to design, develop and implement each HVO project, working toward better patient care around the globe in trauma care, child and maternal health, essential surgery, cancer care, rehabilitation, and more.
