Welcome to the SEA 32nd Spring Meeting

Beth Ladlie, MD, MPH Kristen Vanderhoef, MD

Good afternoon SEA members and guests! We are excited to welcome you to the sunshine state. We are happy to report that April tends to be a beautiful month in Jacksonville, with average high temperatures reaching nearly 80 degrees and plenty of sunshine. Be sure to pack your beach gear!

I feel fortunate to have grown up in Jacksonville and the surrounding area and can’t wait to share our beautiful city with all of you. I’ve had the pleasure of working at both of our wonderful medical centers, Mayo Clinic Florida and the University of Florida Jacksonville. The medical centers vary greatly, which we have used to our advantage for our anesthesiology residency programs.

Our nickname is the “River City” thanks to the St. John’s River coursing through the heart of it. We also have endless miles of beaches; my personal favorites are Amelia Island to the north and St. Augustine to the south. St. Augustine is also the oldest city in the nation, making it a historian’s dream. We are a true southern town and love our sports teams. Hopefully, some of you will be able to take advantage of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp minor league baseball at home the weekend of our meeting.

Jacksonville boasts the largest urban park system in the country, with over 80,000 acres of parks. Beyond our parks, we also have an amazing zoo, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, as well as an endangered big cat rescue, Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary. My favorite attraction is the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, where you can zip-line through the zoo.

Beyond the choices of fun activities, we also have an amazing line-up of speakers for our SEA Spring meeting focusing on collaboration. The meeting will begin on Thursday with an optional workshop detailing how to create an effective OSCE for your residency program. That evening we will unveil the new SEA logo. Friday morning, Dr. Paul Mattessich will get us started by discussing components of successful collaboration. We will then move on to collaborative efforts currently taking place in anesthesiology, with Dr. Andrea Traynor, Dr. Robert Maniker, and Dr. Matthew Weinger discussing Learnly, Anesthesia Toolbox, and Collaboration in Anesthesia Simulation Research. Saturday, we will hear from our pediatric and surgical colleagues, as they detail their collaborative efforts in resident education. We will also hear from Dr. Eric Holmboe on ACGME collaboration efforts as well as Dr. Ann Harman on ABA collaboration efforts. Saturday afternoon has been left open to provide dedicated time to explore our great city while networking and developing future collaborations. Beth and I will provide our example of local collaboration between UF Jacksonville and Mayo on Sunday morning.

We hope you are ready for a great conference, warm weather, and lots of outdoor adventures. We look forward to seeing you soon!
