An Introduction & Welcome from SEA's Newest Committee: Well-Being

The Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA) Well-Being Committee: Fostering Resilience and Building Connections

The Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA) has recently established a Well-Being Committee. Historically, the work of this committee was housed under the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ (ASA) Committee on Physician Well-Being. In bringing the committee to the SEA, the hope is to strengthen the intersection between education, anesthesia, and well-being and to continue the meaningful work that was started under the ASA. This committee aims to promote the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of anesthesia professionals and learners across the spectrum of their careers. Let’s delve into the key aspects of this exciting initiative.

Committee Goals and Objectives
The SEA Well-Being Committee has set forth several important goals:

  1. Supporting Residency Programs: The committee plans to offer resources to support individual programs in providing well-being content to their residents. We are planning to offer support for those designing well-being curricula at their home institutions.
  2. Contributing to SEA Meetings: The committee strives to offer content for both the spring and fall SEA meetings. By incorporating well-being themes, we intend to create a supportive environment for attendees who wish to increase their related knowledge and skills. In the form of interactive workshops, we plan to share best practices, discuss challenges, and foster community.
  3. Establishing Connections: The committee intends to create relationships with sub-specialty well-being groups to streamline work.
  4. Expanding our Online Presence: The committee aims to update and improve the existing SEA well-being website. We will curate resources related to well-being, making them easily accessible to members. Through mediums such as articles, videos, and vetted curricula, it is our aspiration that the website will serve as a hub for promoting well-being within the anesthesia community.

Collaborations and Initiatives
The SEA Well-Being Committee recognizes the importance of collaboration in this important space where a variety of groups are actively engaged. We intend to join forces with other organizations, including the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia. Here are some key initiatives:

  1. Online Well-Being Programs: The committee hopes to tap into the wealth of existing anesthesia-related well-being content by linking resources on our website. These resources cover topics such as mindfulness, work-life balance, and coping strategies. By leveraging technology, they aim to reach a wider audience and provide practical tools for well-being. We hope this initiative will develop into co-creation of comprehensive content.
  2. Repository of Initiatives: The committee envisions a centralized repository of well-being initiatives. This repository will house successful well-being programs implemented by various institutions. By sharing best practices, they hope to inspire other programs to adopt similar approaches.

Leadership and Enthusiasm
Dr. Lauren Licatino, the committee chair, and Dr. Teeda Pinyavat, the chair-designee, are excited about the opportunity to support the growth and development of the SEA Well-Being Committee. The committee is fortunate to have many passionate members, all of whom have joined by attending open committee meetings at the spring and fall SEA meetings. These enthusiastic members recognize the impact of well-being on professional satisfaction and patient care and are driven to create meaningful change within the anesthesia community.
