The last year and a half since going live on PubMed Central have been nothing short of transformative for JEPM. We have had 110 manuscripts submitted during that period, a number easily exceeding the 5 years leading up to go-live combined, with an overall acceptance rate of 51%. We are averaging 89 days to decision on those manuscripts that are accepted for publication. These impressive stats represent the hard work of our editorial team, including Associate Editors Swapna Chaudhuri, MD, PhD; Annette Mizuguchi, MD, PhD, MMSc, FASE; Srijaya K. Reddy, MD, MBA; Deborah A. Schwengel, MD, Med; and Karen J. Souter, MB, BS, FRCA.
In addition to celebrating the operational success of your journal, we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight two selected articles from the latest issue of JEPM. These articles nicely demonstrate the uptick in the quality of submissions since the point of indexing on PubMed. “Using the Teaching Perspectives Inventory as an Introduction to a Residents-as-Teachers Curriculum,”1 by Robertson et al, is notable for illuminating resident views on teaching others, a key sub competency of Practice Based Learning and Improvement. The authors discovered that apprenticeship and nurturing are the two dominant teaching perspectives among residents, both those planning an academic career and those planning to enter private practice. A greater proportion of those in the former group agreed that it was important to identify their teaching perspective.
“International Elective Opportunities in United States Anesthesia Residency Programs”2 by Prin et al, quantifies the work being done by Anesthesiology residency programs to provide trainees with international electives. The authors identified a lack of funding as a major barrier to continued growth of such opportunities.
